Ski Racing History
More than half a century of ski racing history in Adelboden!
On one hand there are the stories of the ski racers coming from all over the globe who ended up on the Adelboden podium.
Some of them might haven been forgotten by now, or do you remember names like Sepp Behr, Charles Bozon or Chiharu Igaya? Other stars of more recent years are Karl Schranz, Ingemar Stenmark, Gustavo Thoeni, Pirmin Zurbriggen or Jean-Claude Killy – they still are idols for many a young skier and live for ever in the heart of a true ski enthusiast.
On the other hand more than 50 years also stand for a huge change in ski racing. Just compare the elegant skiers in old movies on bumpy slopes - slightly bent forwards, legs very close and with a pronounced pole plant – with today’s carving “machines” in their aerodynamic suits racing down icy, rock hard artificial snow fighting for every centimetre of ideal line!
Our sport has changed into a professional business-like sport, the spectator want’s to be entertained, not only by watching the exciting fight for hundredths of a second on the big screen, but also before and after the race where thousands join the winner ceremony in the village and have fun in the VIP tent or in the “World Cup Village” in the finishing area.
If you would like to know more about the long history of the AUDI FIS Ski World Cup we recommend the book „50 Jahre Internationale Skirennen Adelboden 1956 – 2006“, so far unfortunately only available in German. Just click here to order your personal copy of skiing history.
