With half a century of ski racing in Adelboden, previous racers from around the globe have stood at the podium and been immortalised in history. Some might remember Sepp Behr, Charles Bozon or Chiharu Igaya?
Others stars of the past are Karl Schranz, Ingemar Stenmark, Gustavo Thoeni, Pirmin Zurbriggen or Jean-Claude Killy and even today they are still the idol of many young racer.
Looking back over 50 years of ski racing there has been a huge change in skiing technique. Old movies show stylish skiers with pronounced pole plants and legs that seem glued together navigating rutted slopes. What a difference compared to today’s carving machines in their aerodynamic suits cutting curves into icy slopes.
The world of amateur ski-sports has now turned into a very professional business where spectators want to be entertained - not only watching the fight for 1st and 2nd place with only one hundredth of a second separating them but also enjoying the opening ceremony held on the night before racing. Here a live band entertains the crowd before the racers are designates their starting positions via a public draw. And then of course the various celebrations after racing has finished for the day held in the World Cup Village or VIP tent lasting until the small hours.
